Helen Hazon – Rhythm and Blues of Ocean Tides

My design inspiration was the rhythm of the ocean tides causing the water around our coasts to move in and out. The seams in the piecing are all slightly curved, emphasising this movement and giving a gentler feel than straight lines. The five black squares – evenly spaced – add another regular, repetitive rhythmic dimension to the quilt. I used cotton fabric hand-dyed with two concentrations of turquoise and kept the colour scheme simple by using only black for the stitching, quilting and couching.

  1. I like the contemporary, abstract way you’ve interpreted this theme, Helen. 🙂 The squares could be bits of flotsam and jetsam, washing up on the tide.

  2. Helen, I think Margaret has also voiced my interpretation. Well done
