Abstract Sugar Skull
For the abstract theme, I was thinking of a spattered painting. I started by tracing my original pattern of the sugar skull on heat and bond then placing bits and pieces from my scrap pile onto it then ironing it creating the skull appliqué. I’m not sure if this is considered a crumb technique. On the background fabric I started by adding several colors of Angelique fibers, then added heat and bond to some similar fabric strips and then sliced them around 1/4 inch and placed them all around the skull shape. Since that wasn’t enough texture for me I added metallic threads.
For the eyes, I didn’t want them dark so I appliquéd the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in both the eyes, then fused the skull down. Still not enough texture, I decided to couch silver metallic crochet yarn all over the piece. Once everything was in place I covered the piece with black wedding tulle to hold everything down. Since there is a lot of texture and colors in this quilt, I decided to quilt it in simple vertical lines. I still felt it needed a little more, so I hand embroidered little crosses throughout the whole piece with gold floss, then couched around the eyes, nose and skull with a think black rope like thread. I finished it off my binding it with a transparent fuscia ribbon.
