Kaylene Maalste – Artist style #4
Inspiration: Franz Marc not only painted in oils etc he created prints using wood cuts. Some of these prints are simplistic and other very involved around the subject. I chose a painting called “Seated Imaginary Animal.”
The cat pose I chose is one of a cat looking back. The background material is an off white cotton, I made a template of the cat and drew around this on the cotton. Using some of the design elements form the original painting I hand drew these around the cat. The quilt is handstitched with variations of running stitch in blacks, browns, red, turquoise and white embroidery threads.

This is a lovely interpretation, you have used your small, regular stitching and choice colours very effectively. I love it!
Being a cat-lover, I gravitated immediately to this interpretation. Simple, elegant — and very true to the feline “cattitude”!
Kaylene your cat is so real ! I like the movement he has looking back is beautifully enhanced by your beautiful stitching ! and the addition of turquoise as the constrast color is perfect !
What a lovely piece of art, it really stands out and as a cat love I wish I had it! Your hand stitching is so precise and the addition of color is just right, not overwhelming. Beautiful texture!
This is such a beautiful cat. I like the way you “translated” Franz Marc’s simple animal to your own cat shape and surrounded it by the same shapes as he used. Your hand stitching is wonderful. Bravo.
I adore your hand stitching. The cat is so real. The colors you used are so quiet and calm.
Well done.
