Susan Slesinger – Series#3 Walt Disney Concert Hall

Walt Disney Concert Hall is a landmark building located in downtown Los Angeles.  The building was designed by Frank Gehry to be a world-class concert hall and the city’s “living room”.  The building is designed to remind the viewer of sails billowing in the wind.  The building is clad with stainless steel paneling, and features large areas of tinted glass.  I first explored this building for our monochromatic challenge

Techniques:  Fusible applique machine stitched with 100wt silk thread,  photo transfer, decorative machine stitching, machine quilting.

Materials: Commercially printed cotton fabric, hand painted cotton fabric, cotton sateen, silk/cotton blend fabric, cotton batting, silk, cotton and polyester threads.

We are discovering very interesting buildings through your quilts Susan !
The photo transfer is very effective; behind the shape of the building we can really imagine the sailing boat … very nice.

  2. carolinehiggs

One certainly has the feel of sails in the wind! Great machine stitching and a great addition to your series.

  3. Juanita M Moore

    Love the concert hall

  4. I like the fact that you are exploring the different elements of the building, a great idea for the series.

  5. joanbrailsford

A very interesting building and well interpreted. I particularly like the ‘reflections’ that I think I see in the glass areas. A well thought out and executed piece.

  6. An interesting design based on a most unusual building. The shape of sails is clear and the steel cladding is certainly seen in the colours you have chosen.

  7. Your foto transfers are so clear Susan. Beautiful architecture and it really gives you the feeling of a sailing boat. Very interesting extension of your series.

  8. I love the use of just different grey fabrics and a little blue. Great how you did this quilt.

  9. You certainly can see the billowing sails and the photo transfer works really well.
